I guess this is what you call a bitter-sweet announcement. We have been informed that the Annual Juneteenth Festival will no longer be held in Historic Douglas Park. The annual event is getting a makeover. So mark your calendars and reroute your GPS’s.
Per the press release:
After a 21-year run in Historic Douglass Park in North Memphis, the board of directors is changing the festival’s name and location to increase its appeal, retool it as an urban music festival, and strengthen its brand.
After much consideration, the festival, which celebrates the freedom of African-Americans from slavery, will be renamed the Juneteenth Urban Music Festival and relocated to Robert R. Church Park on Beale Street in Downtown Memphis.
“This is an exciting time of year when thousands of festival-goers look forward to attending the Juneteenth festival – wherever it is located. We are rebuilding the brand and making it accessible to a larger audience,” said Telisa Franklin, Juneteenth’s executive director.
The Juneteenth Urban Music Festival is free and open to the public.
