Tyler Perry Donates $100,000 To School In Columbus, Ohio

Tyler Perry made a surprise appearance at a Columbus, OH middle school this past Friday. Perry, who is one of Hollywood’s most successful black men was moved by a recent documentary he saw on HBO. The successful business man donated $100,000 to help student athletes.

Colubmbus Dispatch:

“I want to sponsor as many kids as I can,” Perry told more than 700 students and staff members.

He was drawn to the school after watching a segment on “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” that aired on HBO in September.South-Western schools garnered national attention after they eliminated athletics and extra-curricular activities after a failed levy in 2009.

Voters later approved a ballot request, which resurrected sports, clubs and other activities for a fee.The HBO piece featured Finland teacher Mary Mulvany, who helped start a foundation that raised scholarship money to cover fees ranging from $75 to $150 per sport.“Hundreds of kids will be helped by what he did today,” Mulvany said.
