If you haven been in the U of M area lately you will notice a new McDonald’s at the intersection of Highland Street and Southern Avenue. This is not a new restaurant for the area, just a new address.
If you are familiar with the area, you will remember that it was previously located on the West side of Highland.
The $1.2 million project was a much needed upgrade for the business. Although, there are mixed reviews on the new location, I honestly feel like the old location was hard to get in and out of on busy Highland at times.
However, interestingly the eatery now faces a very busy railroad track at the intersection.
Earlier designs met strong opposition from the University District neighborhood associations and the University of Memphis because the drive-thru ran against the Highland sidewalk.
In the updated design, the 5,353-square-foot restaurant will be situated along the Highland sidewalk with the drive-thru running behind the building, thereby preserving easy pedestrian access.
The restaurant also initially wanted a LED sign for the location, but after delays, they opted for the traditional ‘M’ arch.
The fall semester for U of M students is around the corner, it will be interesting to see if there will be a spike in sale and traffic at the location. Have you checked out the new updated and modern McDonald’s? Reports are indicating its the first of its kind in Memphis.
